the ares outdoor leadership camp ended on tuesday... it was generally fun, more fun than the other camps that i have attended (except the perth trip 2 years ago which was spectacular!) i did not really expect myself to have fun during this camp, coz i thought it would be quite xianz, but it turned out the other way... the camp is held at the marina country club ubin adventure camp at pulau ubin... marina country club, formerly known as punggol marina... actually the site is nearer to changi than to punggol, funny... initially i thought it would look like obs, which i didn't go 2 years ago... that area is actually a campsite + chalet resort! got restaurant, swimming pools (very small ones) and jacuzzi! but we were not allowed to use these facilities :( ubin adventure camp has many facilities, which are those kind of high element activities... leap of faith, rock climbing, abseiling (did i spell it correctly?), jetty jump and the highlight: team challenge pyramid! our class was grouped together with a13... the first day was quite ok, with rock climbing and abseiling... i never tried such kind of activities, so this is quite an eye-opening experience for me... rock climbing was quite tiring for me, coz my hands not very strong, so i only completed 40% of the wall... everyone was cheering and helping the person who's climbing... abseiling was also quite fun, though i hesitated a bit before coming down... actually it's quite fun, coz it's just coming down from about 4-5 storeys in height, and it's quite exhilarating... next up after lunch was rafting and jetty jump... for rafting, we had to play some games to get the materials needed for building the raft, but the completed raft was not quite complete, coz it disintegrated quite easily in the water... it managed to sail through the lagoon at the resort, but it can't survive for the return journey... actually there are 3 big fishes in the lagoon, supposed from the amazon, which has a head that is about 1 metre long! jetty jump was quite ok, just that we ran to the jetty so i went a bit out of breath... so i had to go last... when i jumped off the platform, the stupid sea water gushed into my mouth and it was so freaking salty that i was spitting like crazy... our first dinner was actually prepared by ourselves coz it's outdoor cooking... we were provided with onions, carrots, sausages and hell lot of potatoes... the sausages were quite nice, though they had the 河粉 smell... the onions and carrots were mixed together or with the potatoes... but the potatoes took a longer time to cook, so some of the potatoes were actually crunchy instead of being soft... but it was quite nice... the night activity was called "animal farm", where each group had to think of the sound of an animal, then we were blindfolded and the lights were switched off for us to get our group together... our group decided to move towards the back of the room, and the instructor who leaded me to my designated position while i'm blindfolded actually brought me near the back of the room... so i just have to walk a bit further before i found my group mates... in the end, our group managed to come together! we slept at the area beside the resort where we pitched our tents during the day... the tent was really hot, coz the weather during the day was like smouldering... so i was sweating all the way when i'm asleep at around 1 am... the second day was actually the team challenge pyramid... the structure is 25 feet tall, which is about 5-6 storeys high, consisting of 15 obstacles... we only did 11 of them, and the flying fox is the highlight of the challenge... i went dizzy at the second obstacle, so i had to back out... so i went to help get the flying fox people down... those who have completed the flying fox were at the nearby hut which we started mind games and 欠扁 questions... when weiqi was coming down from the flying fox, a dog at the area was running towards her and jumping at her, making her so stunned... after lunch was some teamwork activities, which i can't really remember the names... one was trying to get the group and a half-filled bucket of water across using a rope that is dangling in the middle, so we had to retrieve the rope... the other was getting the group to climb over a high wall... but we were left with 1 person before the weather changed and we had to head back... campfire was typical, so I was quite xian at the beginning, then we had to do the faculty dance, which i seriously never learn before coz i had dental appointment during the session at orientation 5 months ago and the extra dance sessions i was also not able to make it... so i tried to follow, but it was quite a fruitless attempt... "aiyah, just dance through, won't die lar..." the next day was the leap of faith and the giant finger/thumb (can't remember)... leap of faith is where we climb up a pole and jump from the pole to grab a horizontal bar... i saw this act on a taiwanese variety show before, so i was quite mentally prepared in any way... but when i got up, my legs were shaking like mad... actually i wasn't very afraid coz the height is not very high, but i dunno why my legs were behaving this way... "just let my legs shake and just jump!" ok lor, i jumped and grabbed the pole, so i wasn't that bad... giant finger/thumb was about getting 2 tyres out from a pole about 2-3 metres tall without touching the pole... our group managed to get the tyres out, but we touched the pole dunno for how many dozens of times... after these activities, it was time to break camp after lunch... overall, i think the camp has allowed me to do things that i have never done before, though i'm also confused whether i'm afraid of heights or not, like some others... pic of the day: abstract car trail lights... u never know what lies ahead...
